Caring for your new tattoo
A fresh tattoo is an open wound. How you treat it over the next few weeks decides how bright and crisp it heals — especially for color and realism work. Here is the simple routine.
1The first day
- Leave the wrap or second-skin on for as long as Andy tells you — don't rush to take it off.
- When you remove it, wash your hands first, then gently rinse the tattoo.
- A little fluid, ink or blood under a second-skin film is normal.
2Washing & moisturizing
- Wash 2–3 times a day with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, gentle soap, using only your clean hands.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never rub.
- Apply a very thin layer of fragrance-free lotion or the ointment Andy recommends. Thin is better than thick.
3While it heals, avoid
- Sun and tanning beds on the fresh tattoo.
- Soaking — no pools, baths, hot tubs, lakes or ocean for about 2–3 weeks (quick showers are fine).
- Picking or scratching the scabs and peeling skin — let it flake off on its own.
- Tight or dirty clothing rubbing on the area, and heavy sweating/gym for the first few days.
4Healing & keeping it vibrant
- The surface usually heals in about 2–3 weeks; the deeper skin settles over 1–2 months.
- It will peel and feel itchy around days 4–14 — that's normal. Keep moisturizing, don't scratch.
- Once healed, always use SPF 30+ on the tattoo in the sun. This is what keeps color and black & grey from fading.
If something looks wrong — spreading redness, swelling, pus or a fever — see a doctor. These are rare, but don't wait. For anything about the tattoo itself, message Andy.
This is a general guide. Always follow the specific instructions Andy gives you after your session — he'll tell you what's best for your piece.
